The narrow area of the Suez Canal where one of the world’s biggest ships got stuck carries significant challenges for the specially trained pilots who steer them close to shore. Here's what can cause these vessels to get pushed off course.

blocked the Suez Canal

on Tuesday and Wednesday. The container ship got stuck sideways, causing a backlog of traffic in the busy canal. The area of the canal that the Evergreen vessel was transiting is narrow and carries significant challenges for the specially trained pilots who board vessels and take over from the vessel captains to steer them through waterways close to shores.

The area has cut outs in the banks that can affect a vessel’s heading due to what is known as a “bank effect.” That is when the rear of a ship can start to swing toward a nearby bank when operating in a narrow waterway, according to Andrew Kinsey, a senior marine risk consultant at Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty, the commercial-insurance arm of German insurer Allianz SE.Gregory Tylawsky, a ship captain with the Maritime Expert Group based in Santa Rosa, Calif.

why is this ship referenced as EVER GIVEN, when it clearly says EVERGREEN on its bow?

Gee maybe they should dredge regularly and restrict the length of ships to the width of the canal.

Again? Why do you keep paying to put this in my feed?

Floaty McFloatface? 😉 ⛴️

Does the article include mobile phone distraction an hiccups? Failure to design built-in means of counteracting sail effect of stacked containers in tight spaces (such as individually controllable starboard and port thrusters every 200 feet)?

It was not caused by the 'bank effect'. There were high winds in the channel at that time and the ship was blown sideways & the stern kept going. The freeboard & the cargo acted like a sail. It happens frequently but most ships are only stuck a few hours.

First questions: where was the Captain and was he drug tested?

New rule: the boat cannot be longer than the canal is in width.

It seems a number of internet trolls probably men were blaming the Egyptian Ship Captain for that container ship blocking Suez even though she was far away on another ship when will men stop being so insecure they have to blame females for everything going wrong

These ships need an 'escort service.'

So fake. wsj can't even the name of the boat right in the photo. This is dated non-journalism designed as click bait. WSJ should be embarrassed.

Ships that are too big fail. Banks can be too big too fail. Regulations are good things that, among other things, keep size from overwhelming original purpose.

anyone else miss that big ol boat being stuck? It really brought the world together to make fun of it

A great use-case for AI-assisted steering!

They're too damn big.

Yes, I've heard interesting stories about these pilots as well.

Nah, this was deliberate. They wanted what was in those green containers known to the world. Go ahead... tell the truth... tell everyone what they found! Stop hiding it, or are YOU one of 'those' people?

yep, wind, current, and wakes from passing vessels can do that, but let's face it, drunk, inattentive, distracted, or mariners under the influence does not help!

Maybe people need to keep up. They freed it.

Meanwhile, somewhere in England...

I miss that big stuck bastard.

Was the vessel trying to outrun the sandstorm? Supposedly the ship was doing 13 knots.

Here's what can cause these vessels to get pushed off course.

PEOPLE FREAK....This rarely happens...It also did not take months to get it moving again.....No wonder Wall Street so Up and Down. Wall Street Geeks Speak and Freak ...We can always count on Wall Street making a bad situation worse.

Literally like a million little bitty things, and given the time lag of maneuvering a vessel of this size, the crew has to constantly adjust not only to what they see, but what they expect to see. Any little thing that goes sideways can run you aground.

To the meme posters in this thread, my hat is off to all of you. Good work. The rest of you - pathetic!

Was this intentional? Investigate!!!

If you haven’t seen “The Family” on netflix, watch it and let me know your thoughts. I was seriously shook.

So you're saying this part of the Suez is a tight 'Squez'?

Here’s an idea: dredge the canal.

This was planned. Now the question is who was the intended targets for not showing 200 ships to pass within the week

They need to install those rubber bumpers they use for kiddies in the bowling alley. Those big ships will look like drunks navigating the hotel hallway.

Draft power

Vodka.

This is end of story...

Why is it constantly called the Ever Given when it says Evergreen on the side?

The newly renamed Mitch McConnell has finally had it's head pulled out of its ass.

Lesson to be learned; Don't text and navigate a container ship. comedy

A Major Bowel Blockage.

It is never just a single cause that leads to an 'accident' but a chain of events, with each link typically reflecting some negligence, some procedure violation, some inattention. Today 140 ships will be passing the canal, typically 50/day. Bank effect?

Another example of the problem with big banks. Break them up! (that's a joke, people, don't freak out on me)

As I recall, man manipulated waterways require dredging from time to time. If not done, the safe passage area can decrease. The picture leaves me to believe this might be an area where silt has built up on one side of the canal.

How deep is the water in the canal?

How does GREEN spell Given? Its the Color. Watch out for those Camel Fart Winds. They are a Strong Puff of Sand. 😜

Why doesn't the ship's name in photo match the actual ship's name. No big deal, just curious.

and by crap Pilots.

oh you read the piece in the FT too, huh?

Does this have anything to do with 'Lean' business models where you lay-off every worker you can and overwork the few who are left?

Try Metamucil

I wonder what caused the ship to become stuck in the first place. Could it be........ 1st Mate: 'I'll bet you can't turn this ship around in the canal.' Captain: 'Hold my beer and watch this!'

I served on a Coast Guard harbor tug back in the day. It was small compared to these powerful sea tugs. Sometimes we worked with commercial tugs. I just knew these really big tugs would get this ship out of this predicament and clear the lane. Bravo, good show.

They're too big!

BIDEN?

There is a building in Chicago that has some open floors to stop them from swaying. Maybe they should leave some tunnels in the walls of containers. I think I just solved it.

I'm sure parallel parking the ship will now become a mandatory piece in the Ship captain license exam.....

not buying it

I'm surprised they haven't brought in the inflatables like when they raise ships that sinks.

My niece who is a maritime student said they're idiots.

Where's Superman when you need him?

They were pushing the ship to 13knts knowing that there were strong crosswinds. Potential not much different than racing thru an iceberg field.

Terrorist 'Dry' Run? ... or at least an opportunity now to disrupt economies...🙄

Kind of like a river cruise on the Danube/Rhine river

The Suez canal is getting shallower yearly, because of the volume of water each bordering territory needs for their own consumption. And regular dredging seems to be lacking by the Egyptian government.

Can wind breaks be built along that narrow passage?

Why do you keep refering to this ship as 'Ever Given' when clearly the huge letters name it the 'EVERGREEN'?

In these situations I use TURBO LAX. turbolaxships

I just heard the huge ship is MOVING !

Promoted?

The bank effect happens when the pilot gets drunk and steers the wrong way.

there had BETTER not be any animals suffering on that boat

How symbolic of a pandemic....

Let the 'passengers' off. That will lighten the ship.

Was the pilot on the bridge during this incident?

BREAKING: Ship blocking anything getting passed the suez canal is to be renamed the S.S. Mitch Mcconnell LeaderMcConnell

Did I read that the ship was Japanese owned?

Not enough tugboats on a windy day. In such close quarters with maximum draft and minimal depth of large ships rely more on tugboats and their pilots. Adding additional tugboats because of the wind costs more $$$.

I keep heaing it called the EverGiven. It says Evergreen on the side, what am I missing?

You got all those ships behind it waiting why not chain them up and pull the tanker straight?

All a scam like everything else in the last year. Do they really think people are stupid.

SuezCrisis Here's my solution, a little late (and not to scale):

since this was human made a wrong turn on ship the government wants to up the prices on every thing to making up the money they had to take out there greedy deep pockets an make we the people pay the cost of freeing it on land ass holes greedy mother fuckers

Don't get eaten by the wolves!

Progress !

Ship is underway again !

Biden was the Captain?

How has it never happened this badly before?

Why wouldn't a few well placed ocean tugs (Big honkers) pulling at the bow and stern pull it loose. But they probably tried that with no success I suppose.

One wonders why big ships are allowed to pass the narrow part of the Suez Canal when strong winds are expected.

Now renamed The Mitch McConnell.

Looks like someone going to start working on a new Canal, I'm really surprise they haven't dig one yet

Lesson for shipping and cruise industry. The seakeeping qualities of a ship are still important. That vessel offered an awful lot of sail area.

Here's a a crazy idea: Let another ship of that size through so it can ram the front end and free it.

How? Look at size of ship vs. size of canal. How......sheesh.

pEOPLE ON THE SCENE ARE SAYING UNUSUALLY HIGH WINDS [CLIMATE EXTREMES] WERE A FACTOR...

Where is Magneto when you need him

I am reminded of the great book 'Mike Mulligan and His Steam-Shovel.' Perhaps the solution is to dig a bypass to this part of the canal, and turn the Evergreen into a big luxury hotel.

Might I suggest Vaseline, Crisco, or soapy water?

'The wind' just like 'the wind' knocked down China Joe right?

Where's Moses when you need him We could use his help in Egypt again, this time to part the Suez. 🤷‍♀️

Any 5th grader could figure out how to dislodge it in 15 minutes..

The narrow area of the Suez Canal where one of the world’s biggest ships got stuck carries significant challenges for the specially trained pilots who steer them close to shore. Here's what can cause these vessels to get pushed off course. Great challenge

Solutions are just too simple for many that are not there and few to those on the ground. Take a ruler & draw a 90 degree angle on the picture bottom right. Dig all the way back to the edge now you have a rest stop & expanded turning spot. Problem solved. 100 Tractors 10 days.

Capitalists are all about profit, socialize the costs of business & privatize the profits. Tax payers will end up paying for this Suez debacle.

Can someone explain why it is called the Evergiven when it says on the side Evergreen?

Need to modernise the Suez Canal. Doesn’t have a concrete embankment on both the sides ? Appears dredging has not been done or properly done Egypt Evergreenship Canal de Suez

Hypocrisy, dishonesty, and racism sums up the democrats in congress, their Jim Crow BS for getting voter ID shows what dishonest sons of bitches each and everyone of them are. PUNISHMENT needs to be seen for false news from press. DEMS think voters are stupid. SOON SHIT flies.

Please explain the inconsistency in the name of the ship. Multiple articles indicate it is 'Ever Given', but all the pictures show it is 'Evergreen'.

You had one job..

wow im shocked the dems didn't try to blame trump for that

The narrow area of the Suez Canal where one of the world’s biggest ships got stuck carries significant challenges for the specially trained pilots who steer them close to shore Here's what can cause these vessels to get pushed off course कभी ऐसा होजाता है?

Who paid them to do that? Follow the money...

The captain was humping a female worker?

madonna I was on to this ship with Pompeo , Gagne and Carter. We was disembarked on a emergency shi and was sailing to the airport just in aval of the canal. We was then lifitng up to Israel where they was blasting a jet and faking I was death to the U.S.S.R. Armor!

Shouldnt there have been tugs attached to the stern (and tugs on port and starboard) applying drag to make sure it didn't do this?

Doesn't the ship in the photo clearly have 'Evergreen' on its side? Why are people continuing to call it the Ever Given? Where is the continuity editor?

If they would have had 5 billion pool noodles, 25 million Rubber Duckys, and 100 gallons of Gorilla Glue it would have been easy!

IDK, looks plenty wide to me. Perhaps a squirrel at the wheel?

It was a coup, the people that are probably inside those containers rocked the boat so it would teeter against land.

Going to take a controlled underwater explosion to move that ship.

Hey, y'all watch this! Yo, hold my beer. I give it a full speed ahead and then order a full stop and give it full starboard rudder, it'll do a complete 360.

It wouldn't surprise me if we find out this was planned.

It's too Fing big. They could have unloaded it to 10 smaller ships who reloaded the cargo to another huge ship on the other side!🙄

Next you can tell us how it traced a penis in its path before getting stuck in the canal, an even more significant 'challenge'! 'Off course' for a specially trained pilot, nothing to see here! This is not an intentional act of sabotage, move along!

Why do people call it the 'Evergiven' when it has 'Evergreen' painted on the side in huge letters?

Are there helicopters that can lift each cargo container ?

Largest? I measured and it's only about two and a half inches. Remarkable that the canal is so small as well.

They’re digging on the wrong side of the canal

Where are the pirates when you need them to offload all the booty🏴‍☠️🦜

Welcome to the show MSM your ship is sinking, life is about to get real good, but not 4 u

that would be easy to do

They should build a pyramid underneath it until it pushes it loose.

What if this is China's plan to hurt the oil industry?

Bring in a Crane start unloading the ship - make it lighter and then move it along no?

Okay. But it's worth noting the pilot crews of the Suez Canal are notoriously useless rather than 'specially trained', unless we're talking very uncomplimentary usage of the word special.

Can anyone answer me why they don't bring a crane in and unload the bow where it's stuck?

Problem solved

If they knew of the problem, they might have had a better contingency plan

Why didn't they start unloading that ship's containers right away? Lighten it for more buoyancy.

The dummies trying to get that big ship unstuck ought to get bigger ships in instead of puny tugboats. Hitch up an aircraft carrier or two to the freighter and they'd pull the freighter loose in no time

Dude.. just get construction crew on both sides of the fucking canal and have them shove at the same time Jesus fucking christ. it's so god damn simple

No one is talking about the live Animals LiveTransport LiveExport BanLiveExport StopLiveTransport At least 20 livestock ships caught in Suez canal logjam

Ships of that size should not be traversing the Canal.

CalDisasters Saw squirrel. Turned hard on the wheel. Who among us has not?

Trump's fault, right Gotta be

BOYCOTT GEORGIA! Pepsi not Coke. Lowes not Home Depot. Uber not Lyft. Target not Walmart. American Airlines not Delta. IT IS ON! No NBA, No MLB.... Lets see how long Georgia can last... LET'S DO THIS!

“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many.' Matthew 7:13

Can someone please just send the particulars of what the actual problem of getting this ship unstuck are to elonmusk ? My bet is that he would get this resolved in 24 hours. Plus one of those new Tesla trucks could probably drag it out

I can't wait for the Hollywood movie on this 'Stuck Boat'

This is what happens when you send your Ship's Capitan to cut cost, to the 1/2 price Pirates Hijacking's Class on how to Navigate a Big Transport Vessel.🏴‍☠️🤭🤪😱🚢🚤

In 1967 while on the USS Intrepid we went thru the Canal on our way to Vietnam. Then all hell broke lose behind us with the Middle East War. Ships were sunk and the Canal was closed until 1975.We had to come home the long way around the southern tip of Africa!Crossed the Equator!

LeaderMcConnell, did you hear, the ship blocking the Suez Canal is to be renamed The McConnell.

I say, pour some lard and the two stuck sides. That should have the ship slipping back into action

Crosstown traffic

Why do people keep calling this the Ever Given when on its side it says Evergreen? Am I missing something?

Lesson: ship length must be less than canal width

you can literally only go one way how the fuck do you get it stuck

Ahem. Want a few tips about how to manage this problem?

'Ever Given?' Can you not read? Or proofread?

All you got to do is unload it !

As if this wasn't on purpose

Don't have any ship navigation skills, but after failed attempts to dislodged the ship, why couldn't they offload some numbers of those containers, temporarily, onto other freighters to hopefully make that ship buoyant enough to loosen it?

Isn't time to build a parallel canal of modern proportions?

obviously they need 4 tugs to guide these large ships--duh. also, 2 icebreakers wedging into each side---their powerful engines can do fishtailing to wiggle the ship free with also agitating sloshing.

I find it totally amazing that most journalists do not know how to read. It is not Ever Given - look at the vessel and on the side is EVERGREEN. Small wonder Mainstream Media is a mess.

looks like the canal just needs a lil' Arby's and the ship will be GONE...

By some logic, the pilot should be fired. By other logic, that pilot will never do anything like that again, and thus should be retained. The decision will most likely be based on optics, so, he's probably getting canned.

Perhaps common sense will soon kick in... Optional routes, other than the Suez Canal, should've already been available, in case of 'unforeseen blockades.' Planet Earth offers many options...ImproviseOvercome

Before Kong and Zillas big showdown maybe we can call one of them for a light workout?

Based on the fact that she drew a dick on the GPS map before turning sideways in the canal I assume this is more 'quitting in style' than accident.

what video game is this?

Please. It's simple--the same thing that happened to our country (and your newspaper after Murdoch bought it): It swerved to the right and messed everything up, and now it's gotten ridiculous.

keithbaldrey I think they need to cable and hook up 5 or 6 jet planes and go full throttle to turn this thing the right way. Now I'm no engineer but it's a damn fine idea, no one ever listens to me...why? YoureWelcome

Can you say Alberta oil! Oh, sorry if I offended anyone! No, not sorry!

Multiple lanes are required. Time to create another path.

You didn't mention the 'stupidity effect.'

Two words: Austin Powers

The best way to get it un-stock would be to call Superman

Uh-huh... so, it's costing companies $50 million an hours- in 48 hours it's cost 2.4 billion or so. You're honestly telling us the companies losing that money can't put up $1 million to get this thing off-loaded and moved? Riiiight...

I don't care about all that pertinent info. Why hasn't the MSM turned this story into racism yet? Journos are slippin.

This is maybe a silly idea, but couldn’t they just add a bit of water and let it float off on its own?

and not a word on TV news for 4 days

XeuleBot

We understand the ship's blockage may cause product shortages in the US; to include toilet paper. Does the Wall Street Journal believe we could have a real mess on our hands?

I don't know how many more days of stoppage it would take, but at some point it would be cheaper to dig a short parallel channel so traffic could bypass the problem than to let 30% of the world's oceanic shipping either back up indefinitely or take the long way around the cape.

Nobody’s asking, Isn’t it insane that we decided we need ships that big so our phones and cars arrive 3 days faster?

I don't know how many more days of stoppage it would take, but at some point it would be cheaper to dig a short parallel channel so traffic could bypass the problem than to let 30% of the world's oceanic shipping either back up indefinitely or go the long way around the horn.

I told them I didnt need to practice parallel parking! Guess I was wrong! Someone get a jack!

More tugboats are needed.

I understand that it was caused by the same breeze that got our President. A mighty wind.

I never realized the Suez Canal is that narrow. Wonder this wouldn't happen more often.

They need some choppers to come unload some of those containers

easy answer = female captain

Would you like to know why the Panama Canal doesn't have this problem?

Bullsh!t Johnny '40 Knuckles' can winch em out. I seen him winch a whole Island Town to shore.

They need to interview the Captain:

'Specially trained pilots'.

Size matters.

Thanks WSJ. You seem to relent to a magnetic pull to the red herring, i.e. the story which catches the eye but distracts from the great white shark slipping past your view.

Why not push on one end & pull on the opposite end?

People are saying this is Elaine Chao's shipping company. 🤔

WSJ bunch of crappy news from a crappy owner

I've heard the saying 'turd hung sideways' now I've seen an illustration of it.

A joke. So they never had contingency plans in place to “unstick” a boat? Watch how one ship causes prices around the World to rise for ever item possible. More excuses for delivery delays. Conspiracy.

They can't even get the ships name right.

Lighten up the dam load. Assholes. People are going to make billions from this.

Ships of that size do not belong in that canal. No ships should stack their containers that high.

It's still stuck? Geez. Get a fireboat and an underwater nozzle and wash away all the canal dirt lining under the bow then pull it away.

morgfair 'No, you can't make a U-turn here. Weren't you the captain on the Exxon Valdez?'

morgfair Does no one remember how to mark twain?

Where is Superman when you need him?

looks like a straight line to me but ok

You know you spelled the name of the ship 'Ever Given' when in big white letters it says 'EverGreen' 🧐

That's literally a plot point in Season Two of the Crown: the English are going to corner the market on trained Suez Canal pilots.

Where is the SnyderCutJusticeLeague when we really need it?

Whoever manages the canal needs a better Risk Manager...

“The Ever Given, one of the world’s biggest ships, blocked the Suez Canal on Tuesday and Wednesday. The container ship got stuck sideways...”. The “Ever Given”? We’re there 2 ships stuck?

oops

Suez boat problems is social media gold. But this publication is the product of the Murdoch 'news' corporation and a tool for misinformation and undermining democracy. Do not give them any money.

Stop sending me ads of your pay wall

Uh, turn left?

They should not create long ships in the first place, lol

The Suez Canal is 150 years old! How the heck has it not been widened enough to eliminate these types of blockages?

Why the OTC/Pink market collapsed last month... news you wont get from the WSJ

Apparently even the ship's name can be pushed off course :-) Evergreen, Ever Given

Propaganda, but this video explains the crimes of the 1%

I love all the dads offering ideas like “steer into the skid,”

Thanks, but Taylor Swift already explained this to me.

It never happened when oil prices were high. Never. Just sayin.

Please note: The Ship: A desert sand storm and the fact that with the ridiculous increase in size/number of containers with NO increase in crew.

flood the ballast tanks, let it sink out a hole, and then pump them out.

How about you bring another large ship near it. Raising the water level so you can free it? Have tug boats ready to pull it out?

RomeshNadir With all their GPS tech? This is ridiculous!!

Here's an idea. Offload some of the cargo, then the ship will rise in the water and be more maneuverable!
