Chinese Ambassador to France Lu Shaye during a celebration of the U.N. Chinese Language Day in Paris, on April 21, 2022.On Monday, the government in Beijing appeared to downplay Lu’s remarks, emphasizing“China respects all countries’ sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity,” Mao Ning, a spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry, told a daily briefing when asked about the comments.

Later, the Chinese embassy in Paris said in a statement that the comments were not expressing official policy but rather the ambassador's"personal view."
