Residents across Central PA felt the Magnitude 4.8 earthquake out of New Jersey on Friday morning. Harrisburg University assistant professor of earth system science, Michael Meyer said earthquakes happen quite frequently on the east coast. However, they are usually small enough that humans won’t feel it.

“In more recent times, we've had a lot of 2.5 or 3.5, 3.501. But you know when it rises up to like a 4.8, that's when it becomes much more able to be felt,” Meyer said. “It's often like a big truck is passing by,” Meyer said. Central PA residents, Merrianne Kerr from Cumberland County and Maggie Grab from Lancaster County, each felt the earthquake from their homes.“I heard I think more than I felt,” Grab said.“I didn't have any time to think about anything except the room was moving. That's all I know,” Kerr said.According to Meyer, the earthquake felt by those in Central PA on Friday will only happen once every 10 to 15 years.

The last time PA residents were able to feel an earthquake was in 2011, when a 5.8 magnitude earthquake was recorded in Virginia.
