New details emerge regarding how long James Gunn's new DC Universe deal will last. Gunn, who has worked for DC in the past with The Suicide Squad as well as their rival studio Marvel, has officially teamed up with DC for the foreseeable future as the franchise looks for a new path forward.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY The news of Gunn and Safran taking over Warner Bros.' DC team was the triumphant end to a months-long search for the right executives. The merging of Warner Bros. and Discovery resulted in numerous changes over at DC Films, including such dramatic decisions like scrapping a fully wrapped Batgirl film. Now, Gunn will oversee the creative side of the DC Universe while Safran handles business and production matters.
What Does This Mean For The Guardians Of The Galaxy? Gunn's DC news comes at a strange time, as the newest installments of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise are on the horizon. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, both of which are directed by Gunn, are set to release after he officially takes his role with DC.
It must be noted that Gunn has been open about his future with the Marvel sub-franchise. Next year's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will cap off the trilogy Gunn began in 2014, and the director has no plans to work with the characters again in the future. All that aside, though, Gunn's new position at DC Studios seemingly shuts the door on potential MCU follow-ups even more firmly.
