Self-employed burnout is very real. Here, one freelance writer reveals how she burnt out and then rebuilt

‘They commissioned me!’ I squeal at my boyfriend over breakfast. He nods, eyes half closed, as I continue frantically bashing away at my laptop – balancing it on my lap as I intermittently spoon porridge into my mouth .

Plus, without a manager to balance your workload, or a team to divvy out responsibility to, it's you and your time management skills out there on their own.Add to that the financial fears that freelancing brings with it and you've got yourself a recipe for disaster – however hidden it might seem. My drive to succeed had ultimately been the speed bump I hadn't planned for. And I'm not the only one.A recent Gallup study surveyed 7,500 workers and found that 23% reported feeling burnt out at work very often or always, while an additional 44% reported feeling burnt out sometimes. This stat is even higher when it comes to those who work on a freelance or contract basis. It does get better though.

'Making the time up' is a myth. You can't get time back, and you can't make it up. Whatever extra time you take back to give to your job, you are taking from your downtime – you're in a deficit.I now have an 'out of office' message on most of my email accounts, and it's on constantly. It informs people that I will only be checking emails twice a day, and might take up to 72 hours to respond unless it's urgent.

Self-care advice can sometimes come from a very privileged place. We don’t all have the resources to spend money on weekly facials or massages, but that doesn’t mean we can’t invest in ourselves in other ways. The point is not what investing in yourself looks like. It’s the action of you taking time out of the craziness to refuel, recharge and expand your brain.

25 Ways You're Borrowing Self from OthersAre you basing too much of your sense of identity on other people's praise and approval? Here's how to stop and build yourself up instead. Where was this in 1994? A bit late now. Remember also that most people we encounter in our lives are only a reflection of ourselves. You not having an interaction with them as a person, you are being shown the parts of yourself that need to improve or go in a different direction. Most relationships are not real. Those 25 ways of borrowing self from others applies mostly to women. There are few males that do this but those are either feminine males, metro sexuals, gay, momma's boys, cowards, whimps. Men (not macho) hairy, smelly rude, tough, loud, impulsive heterosexual men, don't do that
