'I built up enough confidence to ask for what I clearly already deserved by gathering evidence, leveraging relationships, and changing my perspective'

Next, I asked my clients for letters of support stating how happy they were with my work, and confirming that my involvement with their account was connected to their likelihood of contract renewal. I mentioned my impressive metrics in my request to the clients, but I also made sure to draw on the relationships I had developed with them.

When objective, quantitative data works with more human-centered qualitative data to tell a cohesive story, the story is richer and clearer than if it were only supported by one kind of data. Further, I knew that if my firm saw the money connected to contract renewal by hearing from the clients themselves, I'd have an even better chance of proving I deserved a raise.

Last, I armed myself with "What Would a White Male Do?" confidence. I shared my data and statistics with a few of my white male friends. They all responded with shock and, were they in my situation. Having privileged people react that way validated my view that I wasn't getting what I deserved. I energetically leveraged their entitlement so that I could best argue the worth of a Black woman in business to a team of all white men. I scheduled a meeting with a VP of the company.

While my initial salary was great, I've always known that growth is larger if your base is larger. I built up enough confidence to ask for what I clearly already deserved by gathering evidence, leveraging relationships, and changing my perspective. Then, I was 27 and still growing into my ability to navigate being a Black woman in a predominantly white, male world. Now, with more experience under my belt, I'm comfortable enough to just walk in and ask.
