Lately I've felt that same thing watching the new wave of big pop headliners. With the notable exception of Billie Eilish, who is played on pop but feels more alternative in her approach and influence, most of these acts I have watched have felt, at least to me, totally contrived. I don't know what they stand for, what they are about musically or if they even like music.
Being a clear student of music history, as he obviously is, Styles understands as well that all great artists before him, from David Bowie and Marvin Gaye to Prince and Joni Mitchell, reached their lofty plateau by taking risks. Just the framework of this show, doing a brand-new album on the day of release is bold. I saw Green Day triumphantly doin entirety at the Fonda before release. That was for just over a thousand people, not over 17,000. To do this show at an arena takes massive guts.

Styles' band was superb, and being a music lover Styles wisely let them have their moments in the spotlight. Then again Styles had nothing to worry about relinquishing the spotlight on occasion because when he wanted it, it was unquestionably his.
