A landmark arch to debut in Los Angeles' Historic Filipinotown will honor Filipino American health care workers. The initiative emerged to bring the neighborhood as much visibility as the city's other ethnic enclaves, such as Chinatown and Little Tokyo.

Eliseo Silva, the designer of the Historic Filipinotown gateway, also painted a sprawling mural in Historic Filipinotown's Unidad Park. The photo of Silva's work is a preview from the Festival of Philippine Arts and Culture, which will be live-streamed on its website October 23 - 25.

A new gateway expected to debut in Historic Filipinotown later this year pays tribute to Filipino American health care workers.The unveiling, initially scheduled for October to celebrate Filipino American History Month, has been delayed several months because of the pandemic. But the half-million-dollar arch is just the latest makeover the district has had in recent years.

"One reason we don't have ethnic enclaves is that we're not dependent on an ethnic economy to survive," he said, adding that Filipinos' fluency in English meant they could find employment anywhere in the city. Chinatowns, by contrast, have endured in part because generations of immigrants who spoke only Mandarin or Cantonese depended on them to find jobs, housing and other resources.

"His time as a council member was really pivotal for how our ethnic identity was strengthened," said Michelle Magalong, executive director of the nonprofit Asian and Pacific Islander Americans in Historic Preservation.
