Community gardens are not all run the same, so becoming a member or getting involved can look different at each site. Given the sheer number of gardens and the shared mission for helping, though, residents in the Houston area are sure to be able to find one to work for them. The beds in the Southside Place Community Garden were built by volunteers and all of the planting and harvesting is done by volunteers, largely on organized work days which occur at least twice a month according to
“The mission of the garden was really to create a beautiful shared space for growing organic fruits and vegetables,” Baker said. Three of Westbury’s beds are used for teaching purposes, and some are used for the benefit of all members. There are two herb beds and a bed devoted to pollinator plants to attract bees and butterflies to the rest of the garden. Any members can pick herbs as needed.
