AUSTIN — As Texas lawmakers return to Austin on Tuesday for the 2023 legislative session, the makeup of the Legislature will be significantly less diverse...

than the state population. The analysis is based on research as well as responses from the lawmakers and their staffs. The story uses the racial and ethnic categories from the U.S. Census in order to accurately compare the Legislature to the rest of the state.

The House has also increased the number of Asian Americans, as Reps.-elect Suleman Lalani and Salman Bhojani are the first South Asians to join the Legislature.The Senate is far less representative of Texas’ demographic makeup. About 70% of its members are white, followed by 23% Hispanic and 6% Black. There are no Asian American senators.
