Under the recently announced Immigration and Customs Enforcement rules, international students have to take in-person classes in order to stay in the U.S.

“[I] thought about what normally happens at UCLA when kids are in tough positions and need to get a class because otherwise they couldn’t graduate,” Kaluvai told. “And a lot of times, kids would offer up their classes if they were planning on dropping them anyway. So I thought we could do that on a larger scale for international students.”Monday reverses protections implemented early on in the pandemic that allowed students to keep their visas while taking online classes.

Now foreign students who aren’t taking in-person classes and want to live in the U.S. have to transfer to a school that has the option of face-to-face instruction or prepare for “immigration consequences,” including deportation. Even students attending schools with a hybrid model can’t take all their classes online and universities will need to certify that each student is not taking all their classes virtually.

Common sense would say the best way to battle the crackdown would be to hold classes.
