Tony Gilroy, writer and showrunner on Andor, reveals the difference between Cassian in his upcoming self-titled series and his Rogue One: A Star Wars Story debut. The Disney+ series — now moved from its original August 31 release date to September 21 — is set to follow Diego Luna's Cassian in a 12-episode adventure through the formative years of the Rebellion.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Up to this point, not much of Cassian's past has been known to audiences. His appearance in Rogue One offered a quick hint at his rough past when he told Jyn Erso,"I've been in this fight since I was six years old." Any other details about Cassian have been left unknown, but with Andor, there is much more for audiences to learn.
"We’re starting [Cassian] about as far away from the guy at the end of [Rogue One] as you could possibly have. And the first season is about the one year in his life — five years earlier — and it’s an odyssey for him. It’s an odyssey, a political awakening for him, it’s an emotional awakening for him. He goes through an incredible amount of things, he’s a different person at the end of the year than he started at. And then in the second half, it’s watching that be put in play.
This already puts on display the stark contrast between Cassian in Rogue One and Luna's character in Andor, as the Cassian from the Star Wars film had an almost blind loyalty to the Rebellion cause. Such dedication must come from gruesome experiences, especially those dealt by the hands of the Empire. The intensity of the Andor trailers released so far points towards an Empire as menacing as ever, on both the ground in the greater galaxy as well as behind the curtain in the Senate.
Andor is over a month away following its release date delay, and anticipation for the Rogue One prequel series is starting to rise. The series will be the first of Disney+'s live-action Star Wars shows to not utilize the franchise's revolutionary Volume technology, instead opting for classic cinematic traditions in its 12-episode run.
