'We Black students who attend [predominantly white institutions] would not be where we are today if it weren't for activists who came before us. It is only right that we continue to stand on their shoulders to fight for Black rights.'

. “We dipped into our budget, donated $500, and then challenged all of the organizations under student government to match us,” says Megan Hopkins, vice president of the school’s BSU. “Student government has donated about $1,500 towards it, alongside our $500. We are also asking for the support of other organizations that have to do with identity to reach out.”The University of Maryland’s BSU is also channeling money toward those who need it most.

At the University of Minnesota , members of the BSU have been attending protests in Minneapolis and have also organized a city cleanup that took place on May 31. The students’ efforts are also evident on their very own campus. “Our BSU is committed to helping our community heal and get the justice that George Floyd deserves,” Gbemi Oyetunde, the union’s president told.

Other Black Student Unions are using online video conferencing to keep in touch and stay on top of the rapidly developing news. “Currently, we are in the process of planning a general body meeting via Zoom,” Louisthelmy said. “We want to talk about the injustices occurring in America toward people of color. We also want to allow students who are traumatized by the recent events, on top of the devastating effects of COVID, to have a safe space to express their feelings, emotions, and experiences.

Black students say they are picking up slack where their universities have fallen short. “My school put out yesterday, and it was the president who made the address,” Jasmine Day, parliamentarian of the Washington & Jefferson College’s BSU, told. “But before then, about four days had passed since George Floyd's assassination, and we decided as a Black Student Union that we should make an address because our school hadn't at that point.” Day deems it imperative to call out universities who don’t stay true to their original mission statements.

(via toofab) TooFab Don't care about this one or the 10 others that resulted from rioting, eh HarveyLevinTMZ ? He was a black man. Most of the deaths have been black men; you know the thing your 'protesting' against? TooFab To think these riots all started because george floyd made a decision to pay with counterfeit money then gets killed by a crooked ass cop because he resisted and refused to stay seated in the cruiser TooFab Law & Order is gone; I support police 100%. They risk their lives, protect communities & protect all of us. For them to see thru the smoke of violent & non-violent protestors is near impossible when 2 sides are in the chaos of the crowd.
