There are better, more eco-friendly ways to discard a tree, however. They can be recycled and reused to create mulch or new habitat, said Alison Baylis, regional urban ecologist at Texas A&M Forest Service. Instead of throwing a live tree out, one way to reuse the pine is to place them in yards, natural landscapes or bodies of water to create habitat and shelter for wildlife.
In San Antonio, residents can drop off and recycle their Christmas trees at one of the five mulching centers from Jan. 2 to 14. Places include the Bitters Brush Recycling Center at Wurzbach Parkway and the Culebra Road Drop-off Center on Culebra Road.
