for any voting system is whether it treats citizens equally. America’s presidential election uses the “electoral college”, which allocates 538 votes based on states’ representation in Congress. A candidate who wins the popular vote in a state is allocated its chunk of electoral-college votes —from just three for Vermont, to 55 for California.
. For example, white people are expected to comprise roughly 73% of an average state’s voters come November. But if the average is weighted instead by how likely a voter in each state is to decide the outcome of the election, the white share of voting power climbs to 79%. That is because the most competitive states are whiter than the national average.
Those whose votes count for less are less likely to bother casting a ballot, it seems. Voters from states that were most likely to decide the election in 2016 were ten percentage points more likely to vote. That suggests that replacing the electoral college might lead to increased turnout.
Doesn’t make a difference whoever won for presidency 🤷🏼♀️. Good luck y’all

Do away with this BS
The Electoral College has always favored white voters. That is the whole premise for the electoral college. Black slaves were only counted as 3/5 of a vote. There were more slaves than white settlers.
Fun Fact: DC has never voted for a Republican...
Yet another thing that has only become an issue since Trump got in. Your liberal demigod, Jacinda Ardern got into power with 36% primary vote with her conservative opposer getting 45% primary vote.
WRONG!!!
The electoral college forcing the president to care about the entire country not just 3-4 states.
Because you're a racist country!
Definitely! Antiquated. Needs to be abolished.
The Brits still don't quite get it. The US is a representational republic - not a democracy. Think of this; had the US been nothing but a democracy it likely wouldn't have survived its Civil War. The result of that would have meant no strong US involvement in either World War.
The EC was intentional. It places the people and the states on equal footing.
Nobody makes people live where they live and we all deserve representation.
So so so trite.
When did the Economist turn into a liberal rag?
American unemployment rate is flat at 20,000 confidence +/- 100 because thee S.S. is worried about not having side-enforcer work prying peasant torturist society citizen-hands off of counterfeit but equal presidents&sex-slaves Wow, I guess journalism is looking up.
You wasted time and money on this rubbish?
realDonaldTrump is going to win the election on November 3rd/2020. USA FED
I guess it favours majority groups like most proportional seat assignment systems (like D'Hondt).
If it's as accurate as the conorona predicting computer model.... I'll give it a pass.
'Wouldn’t direct democracy also favor the whites?' - chillywillers
Getting rid of the Electoral College is how you start a civil war.
The Electoral College prevents densely populated states' votes from overwhelming those of sparsely populated ones. (So California and New York can't elect politicians who will grant the free corn, wheat and potatoes from Iowa, Kansas, etc... There was a time when schools taught t
'America is a Beacon of Democracy' Give me an effing break... Democracy is overrated!!!
'The electoral college splits voting power unevenly across states and discourages voting in uncompetitive states' A thoroughly corrupt undemocratic system, as is the United States. Set up so the 'states' always wield power not the individual voter
JohnBerman Thank You for a great cnn Special!
payment of taxes necessary to vote?
The electoral college is designed to weigh states voting numbers more equally, reducing the predominance of states with the largest population like California and NewYork. TheEconmist is engaging in fake news
Is this the same electoral college that elected Obama and will soon elect Biden/Harris? Also, the last I checked whites make up the majority in the USA. So the electoral college would probably telect that.
Irrelevant.
I'm not putting my fate into the hands of a pure democratic vote, states with huge populations and misguided principles or those who don't own land. Not without the safeguard of the electoral college.
If the electoral college isn't representative of the population, that means the house of representatives isn't representative, which means our democracy isn't a democracy.
Democrazy!!!
What?
Originally established to help our slave states.
This great article by renowned historian Eric Foner explains this well:
It does? Any proof of this? I think it works quite well and it makes foreign hacking into our elections really, really hard!
So 13% will win
The electoral college was meant to give states a say in who presides over the federal government. That's why authority for choosing electors is delegated to state legislatures.
I had to write an essay about this in 2007 for my American Gov't class in Reno High, is a shame on the entirety of the US of A that this bull crap still happening.
You don’t understand it.
Once more, this headline is bullshit. The electoral college magnifies the power of less populated states. Those HAPPEN to be white predominantly.
Some voters are more equal than others.
Fake news fr corrupt cowardly media !
Dear friends, follow didnotyouknow7 You'll know a lot of interesting! 🔥😊
I got this
How long can this last with the rise of the non-white voters such as the black, brown, red, yellow, olive, and beige colours?
So what is the script?
Hmm
Aren't there more white voters, period? So technically any system we use will favor white voters...
