The pandemic has highlighted the importance of small community-based charities. “When it comes to responding to this unique crisis, it’s not really about size, but about impact and efficacy.”

Until the pandemic, the mission of San Francisco’s Food Runners was to save wasted food and deliver it to charities that could cook and serve. When the city locked down in March, leftovers from caterers, hotels and tech-company cafeterias suddenly stopped. Instead of giving up, Food Runners found a kitchen, hired a chef and began making meals.

“That was huge,” says Kristie Fairchild, director of North Beach Citizens community center. Without deliveries from Food Runners, the community center was fighting to keep up with daily...
