HOUSTON COUNTY, Ala. - Houston County Commission Chairman Brandon Shoupe has concerns over Alabama House Bill 73.
HB73 is a bill relating to ad valorem taxes, putting an arbitrary cap on the amount counties can receive in property taxes. An amended version of HB73 was passed through the House with a seven percent cap, which Shoupe said would still result in financial loss, but would be much more manageable than the five percent proposal.
“Everything we do has to go through the state legislature to get approved, so it is incredibly difficult to raise revenue,” said Chairman Shoupe. “If they’re going to take revenue away, that’s revenue that we’re never going to get back. If they do it, I mean, we will deal with it. We’ll do we have to do, but there’s only so much money and now there’s going to be less of it.”
Shoupe said with less money, departments such as road and bridge and the sheriff’s office could see budget cuts, depending on how low the cap is. Shoupe sent an email to multiple Wiregrass leaders, urging them to contact their leaders to oppose any additional amendments to HB73.and receive the latest local news and weather straight to your email every morning.
