David Mundee MIDLAND CITY - With all three phases working, Houston Academy’s softball team rolled to a 12-1 win in six innings over Dale County Thursday in a Class 4A, Area 3 game at Dale County.
“We are continuing to hit the ball well and doing a good job of swinging it in the strike zone. We have been working on attacking the ball but being selective. Defensively, I felt like we played good and the pitchers hit their spots. In the second, Mary Suzan Aman earned an opposite field double down the left-field line with two outs. Emily Adams beat out a bunt single and Aman ran around third on the throw to first and scored easily at the plate. After a Smith walk, Hodges singled up the middle to drive in Adams for a 5-0 lead.
In the meantime, Hodges was mowing down the Warriors, retiring the first nine batters, including five on strikeouts. Magrino walked to open the frame and stole second and came around to score on a Jerkins single up the middle. The Raiders then put runners at second and third after a wild pitch, a flyball error and a stolen base. Aman earned RBI grounder that scored Jerkins and Adams followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home Mary VanRope, who had reached earlier in the inning on the flyball error.
The Raiders had 11 hits over six at-bats with Aman, Smith, Hodges and Jerkins all with two hits each. Aman drove in three runs and Adams and Jerkins both brought home two runs, while Hodges and Rausch had one each.
