HouseOfTheDragon star Steve Toussaint explains why Corlys' battle axe is the perfect weapon for his character. 'I'm going to take you from the shoulders to your navel, and that'll be the end of it.'

House of the Dragon star, Steve Toussaint, recently explained why Lord Corlys Velaryon's battle axe is his perfect weapon. Set around 200 years prior to the events of HBO's hit show Game of Thrones, the new spinoff series is adapted from George R.R. Martin's fantasy novel Fire & Blood, a detailed history of the House Targaryen. House of the Dragon centers on the silver-haired dragon-riding royal family as tensions rise, leading to a clash that threatens to tear the family apart.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Toussaint stars as Lord Corlys, the head of the House Velaryon, the most powerful family in the Seven Kingdoms. Following King Viserys I Targaryen's decision to marry Lady Alicent Hightower , Corlys aligns himself with Viserys' exiled brother, Prince Daemon Targaryen . The two wage war against Prince-Admiral Craghas "Crabfeeder" Drahar who has violently taken over the Stepstones at the behest of the Triarchy.

"I think with Corlys, that's a weapon that takes people out with a blow. Whereas the sword fight is a fight. You learn to parry and to twist into all that. [Corlys is] just like, 'Let's get all that crap out of the way. I'm going to take you from the shoulders to your navel, and that'll be the end of it.'"

Toussaint explains, in gruesome detail, that he thinks the battle axe is a weapon that can stop an enemy in their tracks without the need for the additional movement with a sword. Corlys demonstrates that during the battle of the Stepstones in episode 3 when the lord led his men into the fight and cut down the Crabfeeder's troops one-by-one. The scene showed Corlys' ferociousness in war, but his use of the axe also demonstrated the character's direct and purposefully brutal nature.

In House of the Dragon, Corlys has been one of the most direct members of King Viserys' small council. His bluntness earned him the ire of Ser Otto Hightower as well as the King. The battle axe can be seen as an extension of Corlys' honest and straightforward personality. Instead of dancing around an issue, Corlys would rather address it head-on.
