As some areas in the US see coronavirus surges and others see declining numbers, there's no mechanism for hospitals to shift remdesivir — the only drug authorized by the FDA to treat Covid-19 — where it's needed most.

Dr. Eliot Godofsky doesn't have a single dose of remdesivir for his Covid-19 patients in South Florida. Hundreds of miles away in North Carolina, Dr. Cameron Wolfe has doses he does not need right now.

Wolfe would love to share some of his remdesivir with doctors like Godofsky, given that it's the only drug authorized by the US Food and Drug Administration to treat Covid-19. But as coronavirus makes its way around the United States, with surges in some areas and declining numbers in others, there's no mechanism for hospitals to shift the drug where it's needed most. These California doctors flew to New York to fight Covid-19. Here's what they learned.

Friday, the HHS spokesperson told CNN the agency will use data from three systems to determine allocations of remdesivir: the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention's Healthcare Safety Network; HHS Protect; and a private company called Teletracking. The remdesivir is then allocated proportionately.
