It highlights Hong Kongers' increasing xenophobia against mainland Chinese — even though this reporter is a US resident.

Jiayang Fan is a Chinese-American staff writer at The New Yorker. Fan has been faced with a barrage of racism while covering the Hong Kong protests. Demonstrators questioned if she is from the Chinese government or if she's actually American. She noted that, when with white reporters last week, she didn't face the same vitriol. CONTEXT: HKers aren’t saints but ppl have gotten fired for supporting protests, refused ability to work in China, detained in China, doxxed by mainland Chinese, etc. Add in the undercover cops & there’s paranoia. Also Alex Lo is the Sean Hannity of HK opinion writers.

very misleading......👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻

Hongkongers are just too allergic to the possible undercover and fake journalists sent by the HK gov and CCP. Sorry to hear abt that, but only the gov stopping using those traps on HKers, we can return to our normal status and no need to alert to everyone.

People have become very sensitive after so much infiltration by the police and pro-gov people. Thanks to Ms. Fan who still shows understanding to Hongkongers:

Calling journalist yellow thug........ They must be pro-ccp cosplayer not Hong Kong protesters 🤓

protesters in video is quite gentle, I think. He was clarifying her identity and he explained the reason as well. On the other hand, the women was a bit offensive. Honestly, many undercover or mainlander are pretending Hong Kong protesters attempt to ruin the rally and reputation

On the other hand, the pro-Beijing gangsters are used to randomly attack people wearing black shirt, journalist, passes by

It’s totally misunderstanding... we never attack journalist or any other innocent people, this is our very first rule!!!

Sadly, even the police would now go undercover as reporters. Also, we obviously do not want newspaper like People's Daily to spread more fake news about us. To protect themselves, we HKers have no choice but to ask reporters to show police card.

It seems the reportor was got cursing by Pro-government supporter as they love to call others yellow thug. come on, its been three months. Please get to know which party stand for.

A Unfortunate misunderstanding. There are lots of CCP's spy and pro-CCP people camouflaging as reporters and protesters. This cause Hongkongers become neuroticism.

On behalf of them, I am sorry to say to you, because China’s surveillance system is already operating in Hong Kong, and I am very afraid of it because there are already many Chinese fake reporters who shoot the demonstrators’ photos.

Her chinese face isn't a liability but the Mandarin sh spoke is since we all have a Chinese face. There're always some 'Chinese reporters' like the CGTN & CCTV wrote some fake news about Hong Kong to slander us
