Residential-builder ETFs jump on strong new-home-sales data

Exchange-traded funds with exposure to U.S. residential real estate were mostly higher Tuesday morning after the Commerce Department said sales of newly-constructed homes had surged in May. The SPDR S&P Homebuilders ETF XHB, +1.03% was up 0.6%, while a smaller fund with broader exposure, the Hoya Capital Housing ETF

, +0.62%, jumped 1.3%. The SPDR fund includes as its biggest positions several home-component providers: deck manufacturer Trex Company Inc. is its biggest, at 4.2% of the portfolio. Flooring provider Mohawk Industries Inc. MHK, +9.97% was one of the biggest gainers in the S&P 500 on Tuesday, up nearly 12% late morning and on track for its best day in a month. It accounts for 3.3% of the SPDR fund's holdings.

counts housing-goods retailers Lowes Inc. LOW, +1.03% and Home Depot HD, +1.57% as its biggest holdings. Both were about 1% higher Tuesday.
