Tread tends to collect rocks
The upper has undergone a couple of updates, with the addition of what Hoka calls “support wings,” a heel counter that provides more structure and stability. Testers were most divisive over the Elevon’s new asymmetrical tongue. Formerly, the 2’s tongue is thin and notched for a more secure, second-skin fit. Some testers liked how their feet were locked in and how the tongue didn’t bunch up. Others, however, felt the tongue sat too low, and desired extra padding.
My tempo was a little slower on my test loop, which I attribute to that signature Hoka-heft; heel height and forefoot height in both the men’s and women’s models scored very high in our shoe lab measurements, compared to standard shoe heights. Low energy return is likely also a factor; our lab showed the Elevon to be in the “less” category in terms of responsiveness. It’s a lot of shoe for speeding down windy stretches and pushing the pace.
The trainer’s stiffness is consistent with the first model; both shoes’ were shown as “very stiff” in our flexibility testing. This stiffness benefits performance, by adding a small dose of what I’d like to think of as humility. If you want to go fast, it’s more effort for your legs, which is why the Elevon is a shoe that reminds you—i.e., me—to take it down a notch. Postrun in the 2s, a nagging pain that had been plaguing my knee was almost undetectable.
