‘Hit the Ground Running’: Advice for Chicago’s First Black Woman Mayor From Other Trailblazers

Chicago is preparing to elect its first black woman mayor in a runoff vote Tuesday between Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and former federal prosecutor Lori Lightfoot.

It will be the biggest city in the U.S. to be run by an African-American woman. Among the first was Taft, Okla., 45 miles south of Tulsa, which elected Lelia Foley-Davis in 1973. Doris Davis, in Compton, Calif., was elected later that same year.
