Hilary Duff explains why she didn’t want to star in How I Met Your Father at first. Created by This Is Us writers Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, How I Met Your Father begins with two different timelines, keeping with the original How I Met Your Mother series structure. In one, set in the year 2050, Kim Cattrall plays Sophie, who shares the unabridged version of how she met the love of her life. And, in another, Duff portrays the younger and more hopelessly romantic version of Sophie.
How I Met Your Father recently premiered episodes 1 and 2 on Hulu. However, since it is a reboot of the hit sitcom HIMYM, the series has been garnering attention well before its debut. The two comedies exist in the same universe, as confirmed by a few subtle Easter eggs. And, like the original show, How I Met Your Father boasts a charming cast that includes Francia Raisa, Chris Lowell, Suraj Sharma, Tien Tran, and Tom Ainsley.
“I got a call from my manager saying that there was this project that they wanted to chat with me about. Then I heard the title and I was like, ‘Are you kidding me? What?!’ The original show is so, so beloved and was just so spot-on perfect, that I’m like, ‘Ohh, I don’t wanna do reboot.’ I was a little bit nervous about the sitcom of it all because I’ve never done multi-cam, but I read the script and it was just everything you want a comedy to be.
Duff’s initial reluctance is understandable. There has already been one high-profile attempt to carry on with the success of How I Met Your Mother. In late 2013, a potential spinoff titled How I Met Your Dad was announced. With a cast that would have included Little Women and Lady Bird director Greta Gerwig in the lead role, and Meg Ryan as narrator, the series seemed poised to get picked up with a cast that included several rising stars and the voice of a rom-com icon in Ryan.
Unfortunately, early reviews of How I Met Your Father have been lukewarm so far. But with critics only seeing the first four episodes out of ten, it’s too early to dismiss the reboot outright.
