OF ALL THE tactics governments employ to raise living standards, few stir as much controversy as the minimum wage. Advocates claim that minimum wages help boost earnings in industries with too little competition, and prevent workers from being exploited. Critics maintain that, by setting an arbitrary floor on pay, minimum wages reduce overall employment, particularly among low-skilled workers.
Minimum wages may have life-saving effects. But they are no panacea. The authors point out that, even if American lawmakers had raised the minimum wage back in 1990, the country would still have suffered a sharp increase in suicides . There are several measures policymakers could take to reduce such “deaths of despair”, which killed 47,000 Americans in 2017.
There are no easy solutions to such a complicated problem. But reducing economic distress for America’s lowest-paid workers might be a good place to start.
EmuYdsa You base wages on what a jobs value is not what you think would make people the happiest.
I love how these studies completely isolate cause and effect. A $2 increase in minimum wage will have no impact on movement of jobs to other countries, more investment in automation, lower taxes for spending on social security.
No no no no no. you CANNOT simplify such phenomena. Do you actually believe that a 2$ increase would address suicide?
A clear case of confounding. God my econ finally works for something! (ie not falling for it)
roybelly You know what happens when you assume. 😉

This is a parody account, right?
It really drives home the phrase a 'living wage'. It is disgusting that CEO's/businesses put profits over their own people. Excess profits are to blame - it exposes inefficient markets -when greed becomes the goal over living wages, taxes should be used to offset.

This kind of writting is the reason y i won’t renew my sub.
Wow. This article is...awful. Massive correlation/causation gap, very flawed study that is barely even discussed - then article turns into gun control advocacy. Sigh.
Utter nonsense. Unfollowed.
You guys are done with statistics, aren’t you?
