Truckers are advised to use passing lane and slow down when gusts exceed 35 miles an hour on the Route 147 bridge over the Susquehanna River.

A look at the northbound lanes of the nearly mile-long bridge lit up at dusk.NORTHUMBERLAND – High wind gusts have at times Wednesday required trucks using the nearly mile-long Central Susquehanna Valley Thruway bridge over the West Branch of the Susquehanna River to stay in the passing lane.

Message boards containing the lane restriction are activated when cross winds reach 35 miles an hour. Truckers also are advised to slow to 40 miles an hour. The highest wind gust recorded on the bridge as of late Wednesday afternoon was 44 miles an hour, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said.That criteria was based on theWith the bridge being 180 feet above the river, there is a concern a strong cross wind could cause a truck to upset. The highest guest recorded during construction was 70 miles an hour, PennDOT said.That section, which is Route 147, connects with Route 15 a short distance from the bridge south of Winfield.

Earthmoving is underway on the southern section that extends from the Route 15 interchange to the northern end of the Selinsgrove bypass. That section is scheduled for completion in 2027.
