Ben Mirisch had been losing some weight and not feeling quite as good as normal. Cathedral Catholic High School 's boys water polo standout didn't realize the magnitude of his condition until receiving the results of a routine blood test. The news came as Mirisch participated in swim practice in the spring of 2022. He had to exit the pool and head to a hospital for further analysis that showed his blood sugar level at seven times the normal rate. The diagnosis was diabetes.
His outlook was determination. 'It was life-changing,'' said Mirisch, now a senior. “I just had to learn about the disease and how to manage it. Here I am to this day.'' Mirisch helped lead the top-seeded Dons to their second San Diego Section Open Division championship in three years on Saturday. He scored both of his goals during the two required overtime periods to provide a late push in an 11-10 victory over No. 2 Bishop's in the championship match.
