The most recent National Retail Federation data found that lost inventory from shoplifting, employee theft and fraud costs the U.S. retail industry $46.8 billion in 2017. The good news is, that dropped from $48.9 billion the year before, but it’s still a lot of money. And the largest share was attributed to shoplifting by outside customers. In 2015, Walmart WMT, -0.54% revealed that it loses up to $3 billion each year to theft, or 1% of its $300 billion in sales that year.
The problem is, there’s a collective idea that shoplifting isn’t a big deal. In fact, it’s even a plotline in the second season of “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” streaming on Netflix NFLX, +0.91% where teen witch Sabrina Spellman is dared to steal a pack of gum from a local mom-and-pop shop. Spoiler alert: She does, and without getting caught.
As the NASP notes in its tagline, shoplifting steals from all of us. Retailers often raise prices on their products to cover losses from theft, and those missing sales also cut into local and state sales tax revenue, which can result in raising taxes. And when businesses close over continual losses, the community also loses jobs.
But she’s gonna be a Lawyer!
