Here’s where it costs the most—and least—to get your car fixed:

... [+]Of the myriad instrument panel warning lights that briefly flash on when you engage the starter is one that’s assured to cost you money if it stays lit. That would be the so-called “check engine” light. It usually looks like the profile of a car’s engine and can signal any number of problems, most of which are connected to a vehicle’s emissions system.

A check engine light can indicate something as simple as a bad gas cap that might cost less than $25 to have replaced, to a defective catalytic converter that can set you back a considerable amount of money to swap out. Many motorists simply ignore the warning if the vehicle seems to otherwise operate normally, but that could come to cost them more in the long run if what starts out as a minor malady eventually turns out to be a more serious problem.

Depending on where you live, the cost to fix a check engine issue will vary, according to the website CarMD.com’s 10 annual ranking of car repair costs. As it turns out, residents of Vermont enjoy the lowest repair costs in this regard at an average $342, while those living in California pay the highest amount at an average $414. We’re noting lists of the 10 most- and least-expensive states for auto fixes below, based on CarMD.com’s analysis of more than 15.

“Several factors contribute to a state’s average repair costs, including vehicle age and type, how difficult the repair is, required parts, how much time is needed to make the repair, and what the shop charges per hour,” explains the website’s technical director David Rich.

Fortunately in this pandemic age, local garages, and many dealer service departments now offer “touchless” pick-up and delivery services, so you have no excuse not to have your vehicle examined should the check engine light stay on.
