According to the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, the commemoration began in 1926 when Carter G. Woodson created “Negro History Week.” He chose the second week of February because it included the birthdays of President Abraham Lincoln and abolitionist Frederick Douglas.

In February 1976, President Gerald R. Ford proclaimed February as Black History Month as a time to “review with admiration the impressive contributions of Black Americans to our national life.” In 1986, the U.S. Congress, in a joint resolution of the House and Senate, designated February as National Black History Month.
