Standup comedy, gruesome murders and an inspiring family movie will make for eclectic January viewing on Amazon Prime Video.
“Broad City” ended its five-season run on Comedy Central in 2019, but co-creator Ilana Glazer is back with her first standup special — “Ilana Glazer: The Planet Is Burning” — as Amazon.com Inc.’s AMZN, -0.32% streaming service tries to challenge Netflix Inc.’s NFLX, +1.41% dominance in comedy specials.
For viewers looking for more of a downer, there’s the docuseries “Ted Bundy: Falling for a Killer” , which tells the 1970s serial killer’s disturbing story from the perspective of those he hunted: women. If that’s not unsettling enough, there’s also the streaming debut of last summer’s hit horror movie, “Midsommar” , a darkly comic yet nightmarish film about an idyllic Swedish village that hides a terrible secret.
A good-hearted comedy may be just the palate-cleanser your brain needs after that, and the Amazon original movie “Troop Zero” should fit the bill nicely. Viola Davis and Allison Janney star in the story of a young girl with dreams of outer space who recruits a group of misfits to form a scouting troop so she can qualify to be part of a NASA project.
