After years of criticism for being overly male and white, the Academy has tried to prioritize diversity and inclusion in its annual addition of new members. This year, 45% of them are women, 36% are from underrepresented ethnic and racial communities, and 49% are from 68 countries outside the United States. Voting membership has now risen to around 9,300.
The Academy says it has tripled its number of non-white members since 2015, when there were 554 such members or 10% of the overall body. As of this new influx, there will be 1,787 such members, or 19% of the overall group. It has also more than doubled its number of women, from 1,446 in 2015 to 3,179 today .
The class of new members is often freighted with recent nominees, and this group includes 75 of them, including 15 who won, and five who collected Scientific and Technical Awards. The list revealed today is only who has been invited; the Academy never says if they accept or not, although most do. Eight people were invited to join multiple branches, including Erivo, who was nominated this year not just for her lead performance inbut for her work on the nominated song from that film. But prospective members can only choose one branch of the Academy if they accept the offer to join.
