In Welling's case, if the Smallville animated sequel series actually happens, that would be a way for him to continue playing Superman. In terms of numerous versions of Superman coming together in live-action, Warner Bros. could literally compete with Sony's Spider-Verse, by using the many versions of the Man of Steel, which would also theoretically allow them to bring back as many previous Superman actors as is feasible.
Even if Cavill nor Welling ever returns as Superman, it doesn't erase the great legacy that they have, whether it be through the DCEU or Smallville. The fact that Welling was even able to participate in Crisis on Infinite Earths nearly a decade after Smallville ended speaks to how any Superman can live on even after their film franchise or show is over.
