“I was overextended and overexpressed in my dominant, masculine energy,” says Gonder. “There was no balance. I always took emotional fluctuations as one thing: a sign of weakness.” What made the situation even more complex was the fact that Gonder’s relationship with her father had been fraught. Yet when he died, she felt very calm. In retrospect, she realizes how much she had been holding onto negative emotions around her father, who always had worked hard and rarely showed up as a dad when she was young. “After my father died, I saw clearly how, as a child myself, my nervous system became wired around the idea that you shouldn’t rest too much,” she says.
