The head of The New York Times editorial page, James Bennet, has resigned over a controversial opinion piece calling for federal troops to be deployed to quell rioters. But his tenure as editor, the publication says, was 'marked by several missteps.'

, in a photograph taken in 2017 in New York. Bennet has resigned amid outrage over an op-ed advocating the use of federal troops to quell protests.editorial page, James Bennet, has resigned after he oversaw the publication last week of a controversial opinion piece by Republican Sen. Tom Cotton that called for deploying federal troops to end unrest sparked by the death of George Floyd.

The newspaper on Sunday announced the resignation of Bennet, who became editor of the page in 2016. In a note to staff announcing the departure, publisher A.G. Sulzberger cited"a significant breakdown in our editing processes."along with a number of questionable assertions made by the Arkansas lawmaker, reportedly elicited strong objections from not only readers, but also from the staff of the editorial page and newsroom.

It said Cotton's assertion that"cadres of left-wing radicals like antifa" were involved in violence at protests"has not been substantiated." The editor's note also said the senator's claim that the police"bore the brunt" of violence at the protests was overstated. Initially, Bennet, who is the brother of Colorado Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet, sought to defend the editorial's publication, writingthe day after Cotton's editorial. In it, Bennet said he personally objected to the idea of sending federal troops to control protests, but that it was important to represent other points of view in the pages of the newspaper.

"We published Cotton's argument in part because we've committed to Times readers to provide a debate on important questions like this," he wrote."It would undermine the integrity and independence of The New York Times if we only published views that editors like me agreed with, and it would betray what I think of as our fundamental purpose — not to tell you what to think, but to help you think for yourself.

Journalism is meant to inform the public as to help STRENGTHEN the community in which it represents. Not bolster or glamorize violence which is never the answer in a civilized world. Time to move forward now...

Good. It is time for new blood to be in charge. Not an old fart that is okay with spilling innocent blood.

The NYT, WaPo, NPR, CNN, and yes, FoxNews...they're all propaganda outfits. You're a fool if you pretend otherwise.

Good, now get rid of Bari Weiss.

Rewriting the history, nice

Heaven forbid anyone who first align with NY Times agenda....

Lmao at all this nonsense with that newspaper.

HEAD of the new York times? His head is still in there. That's the head of the world. He's HEADING out. His hair follicles gave up, his head too big. He can read Professor X's mind. 😂

I wish all opinion journalists stepped down from their positions. opinion journalism destroyed the integrity of journalism

Several? Is that word being used to hide negligence and accountability?

NYT as an organization needs to understand that “what-about-ism” isn’t journalism & offering same platform to conspiracy theorists & advocates of truth is a dereliction of duties. Yes, Conservatives & Liberals deserve same level of respect but ONLY if they appeal to fact & truth.

Guy has to resign over an opinion? Are people being fired for saying 'dedund the police'? Regardless of what I think of either statement, these are counterpoints in a discussion of current events. And we're firing people for trying to make informed opinions? Smh.

Needed to be in Lock Step with the Movement. He forgot, and thought for himself. Authoritarians can't have that.

nytimes: reinstate an ombudsman.

Prostrate yourself before the woke authoritarian mob

.nytimes now's your chance to hire me

Censorship. Not a good look for a major Newspaper

It was NOT an editorial -- a fairly basic error of the type illustrating that few still care about news and newspapers.

Can we just get rid of the opinion section altogether?

Gotta roll him for not towing the official Party narrative

It’s about time

The OpEd section over the past five years has been a gnarly stain on the otherwise historically brilliant work of the Times. This was much-needed change even before the Cotton clusterfuck.

“marked by several missteps”

Good riddance.
