Houston Astros starting pitcher Justin Verlander pitches during the second inning of an MLB baseball game at Angel Stadium on Saturday, April 9, 2022 in Anaheim.ANAHEIM, Calif. — Justin Verlander sat mired in the type of mess he’s mastered escaping. A large crowd rose to its crescendo. Baseball’s best two players emerged from the third-base dugout. Two runners stood in scoring position. The Astros trailed by one run in the fifth inning with an offense that never showed up to the ballpark.
“A lot of nerves, a lot of anxiousness leading up to it,” he said. “Kind of, I don’t know, felt like my debut.” “Once I get out on the field and start throwing, I kind of feel like my happy place,” Verlander said. “It’s like, ‘All right, this is business as usual, even though it’s been that long.” Verlander threw 22 sliders and 15 curveballs. They generated a total of three swings and misses. Pitch execution and shape bothered Verlander, but seemed secondary in the entire scope of Saturday’s outing.
Verlander understands the task, too. He felt Saturday’s outing nearing an end in the fifth inning. Max Stassi stung the first pitch he threw for a double. He walked Brandon Marsh on five pitches, appearing agitated at his waning fastball command. Verlander emptied what energy he had remaining. He caught Ohtani looking at a full-count four-seamer that dotted the inside corner. Ohtani disputed the call, but Statcast showed it clipped the strike zone. Verlander threw him four fastballs in all. Every one of them eclipsed 94.4 mph.
