“Gone With the Wind” is back on HBO Max — with two additional videos that discuss the historical context of the classic film. WarnerMedia had pulled the movie two weeks ago, citin…

discusses “why this 1939 epic drama should be viewed in its original form, contextualized, and discussed.” A second, hour-long video is a recording of a panel discussion, “The Complicated Legacy of ‘Gone With the Wind,'” from the TCM Classic Film Festival in April 2019, moderated by author and historian Donald Bogle.

“The film has been repeatedly protested, dating back the announcement of its production,” Stewart says. “Producer David O. Selznick was well aware that Black audiences were deeply concerned about the film’s handling of the topic of slavery, and its treatment of Black characters.” “The film’s treatment of this world through a lens of nostalgia denies the horrors of slavery, as well as its legacies of racial inequality,” Stewart says.

“Watching ‘Gone With the Wind’ can be uncomfortable, even painful,,” Stewart says. “Still, it is important that classic Hollywood films are available to us in their original form for viewing and discussion.”temporarily. WarnerMedia had said it planned to return to the movie to the library with the appropriate disclaimers.

Glad I bought this before HBO could make its political statement on my movie. I'm smart enough to know nothing good ever comes from forcing your will upon others but luckily HBO has got its ass covered. WHAT A FUCKING JOKE YOU ARE HBO. OF COURSE ANY KIND OF SLAVERY IS BAD, ANY

I'm petitioning the ausgov to create a racism classification for film & television. Media censorship should be the authority of the Classification Board, not virtue signalling big business like netflix. Deleting films is whitewashing racismratingsnow

I’m so glad they TOLD me. Cause I never would have known otherwise!!!

I will never subscribe to HBO again!

This film depicted slavery entirely accurately. Seems like the slaves had it pretty good. I don't know what everybody is fussing about.

“...Denies the horrors of slavery”... the same way that the Black Lives Matters protestors deny the evil crimes of George Floyd, a man who held a gun to a pregnant woman’s stomach, and glosses over the genocidal mayhem of Marxism?

Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell is one of the most popular novels in the world, winning the Pulitzer Prize and having the unusual distinction of being outsold only by The Holy Bible. PulitzerPrize

Scarlett O'Hara is a headstrong, independent, resilient survivor. The literary character and author were women far ahead of their time. HBO can shove the disclaimers. They should encourage a study of American history instead of force feeding LeftistCrap

They do know it was a book right?

am so done with HBO after they try to stop this movie !! I am getting so sick of all the hate in this world taking away great movies wont fix the wrong of the world!!!

Idiots who attacked HBO.... This was the plan from the beginning Thank you hbo for doing this

understand the history, learn from history.

Ok...I thought they banned it because of the constant use of the term “white trash” or “poor white trash”

HBO Max should add Spike Lee's 'BlackkKlansman' for free for anyone ordering 'Gone With The Wind' Cc brianstelter aoscott jasonintrator nhannahjones

brianstelter Frankly dear, I don’t give a damn

Is Leni Riefenstahl's 'Triumph Of The Will' next on HBO Max? Where does it end? Cc brianstelter nhannahjones jasonintrator aoscott

Stupid

BretBaier The film was not supposed to document the horrors of slavery. The film was about the Civil War. How ignorant.

BretBaier Garbage

What to see something that will really make your blood boil? Get a copy of “Holliday Inn” with Bing Crosby. Trust me. Gone With The Wind is nothing.

So glad it's back. One of my favorite movies of all time.

brianstelter Is 'Birth Of A Nation' next on HBO Max? Where does it end? (And why didn't Hattie McDaniel's character have a real name?) Cc nhannahjones

BretBaier No, it doesn't.

When I was a kid in the late-1990's. My mother told me about her late grandmother loves 'Gone With the Wind' is one of her favorite movies.

BretBaier lol, it wasn't meant to be War and Peace, it was a cheesy romance novel about two flawed, desperate characters, with the Civil War as a background...it was never considered American history, and if you couldn't see the horrors of slavery in this movie, you're a moron.

BretBaier The fact HBO feels their viewers need a disclaimer here, on a movie that is decades old, beloved by millions, shows such a shocking decline into our collective stupidity. Really? You think we are this obtuse, that we couldn’t recognize that on our own?

brianstelter This is a beautiful movie ,superb acting, wonderful scenery ..the customs are breath taking. Hattie McDaniel won best supporting actress ! The first time a black woman won an academy award .It was a movie about the old south.Banning it is a slap in McDaniels face !

BretBaier HBO should go.

BretBaier I’ll never be hungry again

brianstelter So not showing slavery in a movie set around the civil war is now denying the horrors of it?

Can we slap that on other movies as well? Like The Phantom Menace?

I watched the “disclaimer intro” and it does not address how the character of Mammy is a stereotype (or how Hattie McDaniel was not allowed to portray roles that weren’t servants). I think that is as central to the story of Hollywood as is the whitewashing of slavery in the film.

BretBaier HBO is trying to milk this classic! Hypocrites!

The Democrats and Hollywood scum are the deniers; deniers of history. Face the evil and learn, don't shut your eyes and deny it exists.

Ball's in your court, DisneyPlus.

Deny it all you want. We know the truth.

Great. HBOMaxPR hbomax HBO Now please put a disclaimer on all Mafia films, letting people know that only a tiny percentage of Italian-Americans are involved in the Mafia. Thanks in advance.
