Having a coil fitted should not hurt, say experts

Their comments came after BBC Radio 5 Live's Naga Munchetty shared her experience, prompting many to recount their own stories of painful coil fittings.

Naomi is 26 and from London. She went for a coil, or intrauterine device , fitting a couple of months ago but had to stop the procedure when it became too painful."My doctor was very kind and understanding and told me at the beginning we could stop at any point so when the pain became so bad I did ask to stop. However, if she hadn't said that to me before I don't know if I would have felt comfortable asking her to stop.

What kind of 'experts'? The kind that also makes stupid legislation about medical procedures they have no business meddling in?

Eve_McGarry I disagree 😂😂😂

Did a man write this? From what I've heard from friends it's agony.

Disagree with this! It does hurt; the cramps & bleeding afterwards are excruciating and the ongoing cramps are tantamount to torture! Was glad to get rid of it!!

I like my coil but having it fitted was the most painful thing I've ever been through. Bet these experts are men

I had mine fitted, it was slightly uncomfortable, but not awful. I think ultimately everyone is different and will have a different experience.

Unless there's a disclaimer in this article saying 'none of these 'experts' have had a coil fitted', I'm not reading it. Mine was extremely painful to have fitted and everyone I know who's had one said the same. This is bollocks and you know it.

Proper pain relief management is sadly mostly ignored in most non surgical gynecological procedures. I’ve been through many that were excruciating like she describes. Now every procedure triggers PTSD. I warn them that it will happen, as it happens now every time without fail.

Bet a man said this 🤨

Mine was fitted by a nurse who had been trained to fit them. There was some discomfort but not as bad as what I was expecting.

I don’t understand the rhetoric of it shouldn’t hurt - when most women say it does. So either the docs are all doing it wrong, or your information is inaccurate. Why are we not routinely giving local anaesthetic?

I’m due to have mine removed this summer. I’m absolutely dreading it.

Reading the comments I’m certainly fortunate to have never experienced pain with the fitting it’s the aftermath for me months of side effects until it settles awful and miserable 😩

That sounds uncomfortable to have in place. Even shocking!

I got a coil fitted decades ago by my GP. No issues at all for nearly 10 years. Then it got displaced because of heavy lifting. Then it was a continuous dull ache. Got it out a few days later with no further issues.

Coils hurt. They hurt fir a long time. I've had it 6+ months & still have constant cramps. Even though it's less hormones than da pill, it still effects my mood. Women's choices are shit. This article is written by some effort to stop us saying this: Men. Go get a vasectomy.

It is painful to look at. Also, contraception should be a bloody team effort. Please invent something just as horrifying for men. Thanks. 😊

It’s agony. I ended up on my hand & knees throwing up into a vomit bowl. Should have had one removed in February but service no longer provided at hospital it was fitted so it’s still in. Told to go to GP to “see if they will do it”, to no avail. Def not a positive experience.

I was in terrible pain for a week after mine was put in

Bloody (literally) does though.

Er what? I literally couldn't walk home, was in bed for a day afterward and was told to take painkillers before, during and after the procedure so...

Despite the agony, it’s still been the best option for me for many years. Guess I’ll just have to ride it out

Experts are wrong.

It really bloody does, and for days after too. Perhaps the experts should fix that instead of telling women to keep quiet about it

Well I was put to sleep both times. Thank GOD I was anaesthetised for removal too since they both were embedded. Horrific experience.

Why don't the 'experts' listen to all the women who say that it *does* hurt?

Male experts perhaps? Anecdotal I know but imho it fecking hurts!

I would rather give birth to triplets then ever having a coil, the worst pain I have ever had.

I had coils over 30 years nurse done them all. Had severe weight reactions with the the pill. I always had bad hormones migraines reactions as my cycle went between 3 to 7 weeks. they calmed a bit with coil I'm now 62. It really depends in quality of nurse fitting/ person health

Having a Mirena coil fitted was more painful than giving birth. I was told it’s because they use forceps that pull inside the uterus - excruciating. Worth it in the long run, told it’s less painful to have removed, plus had no periods, but would never want to go thru it again.

I had one fitted it was agony and only got worse over the next couple of weeks, it was so bad I had to have it taken out - Doctor very unsympathetic.

Are the experts men?!

‘Say make experts’

I bet a bloke decided it wouldn’t hurt!

Millions of women report pain while having a coil fitted despite male consultants insisting it shouldn't. But it does. Who says so? The women having the procedure done to them. This is not a sodding debate.

Yeah right

Should not

I had 2 kids by emergency section so cervical scarring. 1st coil fitting was horrendous, so much so I had it fitted under a general. When they changed it I saw a community specialist & it was still horrendous. Generalisations aren't helpful

Absolute nonsense. That part of the body has nerve endings that are not supposed to feel little sharp objects being poked around. I can tell you now, it’s far more painful than it possibly should be, but none the less, it’s agony! Worst pain I have ever been though. But worth it.
