UTSA quarterback Frank Harris competes against Texas during the first half of an NCAA football game on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2022, in Austin, Texas. MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Limping into Friday’s Conference USA opener with an array of injuries, coach Jeff Traylor said the Roadrunners just had to “find a way to get home” with a win to enjoy a rare restful Saturday.
Quarterback Frank Harris continued to etch his name into the program record book, setting a new program single-game mark with 414 passing yards on 27 of 36 passing . Even with four potential starters at offensive tackle still out with injuries, the Roadrunners covered more than 70 yards and netted points on six of their first eight drives, reaching the end zone five times to build a three-score lead during the third quarter.
Middle Tennessee responded with a 53-yard touchdown run up the middle by Darius Bracy, but the Roadrunners again extended the lead to two scores, with Trelon Smith punching in rushing touchdown from 2 yards. But Middle Tennessee started to rally in the fourth quarter, snaring interceptions on three straight UTSA possessions. After a Blue Raiders field goal, defensive lineman Jordan Branch fought off an attempted cut block and reached up to pick off a pass from Harris, rumbling 37 yards for a touchdown that shrank the margin to 38-30 with about 10 minutes to play.
