Harriet Tubman sculpture arrives in this Texas town for Juneteenth

In celebration of Juneteenth , a sculpture of Harriet Tubman is headed to Bastrop . Wofford Sculpture Studio 's ' Harriet Tubman : The Journey to Freedom' has been on tour throughout the U.S. since 2020. Beginning June 15, the 9-foot artwork arrives in Texas for the first time, and will be on view at the Kerr Community Center through August.

She later served as a scout and spy for the Union Army during the Civil War and became an activist in the women's suffrage movement. The sculpture depicts movement in Tubman's dress to mimic how an American flag might wave in the wind, and as a metaphor for the opposition she faced. There are broken shackles at her feet. She is shown protecting a young woman, and crossing the state line between Maryland and Delaware into freedom.
