Airbus’ story is a messy one, to be sure, with way too many chapters to summarize here. Ambitions among German and French political and bureaucratic leaders in the 1960s to create a European competitor to the big American airplanes makers drove a shotgun marriage of the two nation’s largest aerospace companies. It initially stopped well short of being a true commercial partnership, let alone a real merger.
Built to compete against Boeing's workhorse 737 line of jets the Airbus A320 family of planes now has out-sold the 737 over its 35 years on the market. In 1988 the turning point for Airbus arrived with the introduction into service of the A320. Sized and engineered to compete with Boeing’s workhorse 737, the A320 brought significantly lower operating costs for short- and medium-haul routes. It was an immediate sales hit. Some would argue that it’s Airbus’ only real hit.
Of course Boeing executives and supporters, including the U.S. government, complained bitterly – and formally before the World Trade Organization - that Airbus was benefitting from improper government subsidies that enabled it to offer below-cost prices on its planes, the A320 in particular. That would be an illegal practice under WTO rules. Airbus and its backers in Europe countered with their own complaints that U.S.
