The 87-year-old was selected fifth-overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1959 NFL Draft.

He played with the team through the 1975 season, and was the MVP of the team’s Super Bowl IV win. Dawson was the NFL’s Man of the Year in 1973, and put together a long list of accolades across his tenure with the team. His No. 16 was retired by the Chiefs, and he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1987.

He finished his career with 239 touchdown passes against 183 interceptions, and threw for 28,711 yards. He had a long career as a sports media personality and announcer after his playing days were over. That included a run from 1977-to-2001 as the host of HBO’s Inside the NFL.
