Many melanomas go undetected because they are located in places that often go unobserved like the scalp, ears or neck. Hairstylists, who see their clients and their scalps regularly, are often the first line of defense in early melanoma detection.

A hairstylist can save you from a bad hair day, but it may be surprising to know that a hairstylist can also save your life.

Susie Musec, a former hairstylist and current teacher at the Paul Mitchell school in St.Louis, Missouri, has worked in cosmetology for 40 years. During that time, she’s had personal experience spotting melanomas. “We had a week where about four or five patients came in with very aggressive melanomas that were all found on the scalp, and they were all identified by their hairstylist. And all of these melanomas were caught relatively early,” she says. “So I started to think about how I could leverage hairstylists in assisting the dermatologist. And what I realized was that a lot of them were actually very hungry for education.

My new hair stylist saw a mole near my bangs hairline & mentioned it 2 me!! Told her I & MD was aware of it!!👍She’s the only 1 2 say anything 2 me in the many I’ve had!!!

Or you could make a yearly visit to a dermatologist. I do and mine found melanoma early and the cancerous growth was removed in 2016. Oh, then I was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in 2018 (stage 2 and now I'm cancer free). Moral; see your doctor on a routine basis if you can.

My longtime stylist helped me first detect hypothyroidism, when he noticed my hair starting to thin. Bless observant stylists! ❤❤

My dentist had to send many patients to the doctor during the AIDS era.

Likewise with dogs. My dog's vet found a melanoma on his gum that I never would have seen, cuz who looks there?
