FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Golden Valley Electric Association announced, on Wednesday morning, their fuel and purchased power rates will be increasing, starting March 1.
The price will rise 4.8 cents - from around 12 cents to just under 17 cents per kilowatt hour. GVEA says this will likely lead to an estimated increase of $29 in the average user’s monthly bill. “The primary reason for the increase is a couple of different things,” explained Ashley Braddish, GVEA’s Director of External Affairs and Public Relations. “Looking back through our last quarter, December through February, there was an under collection that was due to Healy experiencing a long, unexpected outage. And that required GVEA to generate power using more expensive fuel oil generation sources at a time when the cost of fuel was higher than projected.
“So essentially GVEA’s projections were lower than what it actually cost us to provide power to our member,” Braddish summed up.“Looking forward, we don’t expect to be able to purchase any economy energy from South Central Utilities, and that’s due to the natural gas constraints in the Cook Inlet,” Braddish said and continued, “and also we have multiple of our lower-cost generation units that are scheduled to be down for some portion of the quarter for maintenance.
Fuel oil costs are expected to remain high for the rest of the quarter. After May 31 the price will once again be reevaluated.Teen charged with murder in Point Hope, will be tried as an adult
