The U.S. Gulf Coast is glowing like a bad sunburn on maps that show COVID-19 trouble spots in red. Alabama's coastal counties lead the state in new cases, and some events have been canceled in Florida and Louisiana because of the latest surge.

Yet just a few miles away, a hospital is running out of critical care beds, its rooms full of unvaccinated people fighting for their lives.

Inside The Hangout restaurant, where dancing on tables is encouraged, “Cotton Eye Joe” received a raucous reception from the largely unmasked customers. “After Memorial Day it was, ‘Everything is back to normal, go to the beach, take off your mask,’” said Dr. Bert Eichold, the chief public health official of Mobile County, just west of Gulf Shores. Mobile County’s COVID-19 positivity rate has skyrocketed to nearly 30%, and the county has the most new cases in the state.

Lulu’s, a popular Gulf Shores restaurant owned by Lucy Buffett, the sister of singer Jimmy Buffett, is among those that recently had to shut down for a week because the virus was racing through workers. Hospital executives joined together in Pensacola last week to plead for more vaccinations while also knocking down false rumors about vaccines and masks. In an area dominated by Christian conservatives, Mayor Grover C. Robinson IV made a direct appeal for churchgoers to get shots.

This is great for tourism eh? Smart govs following their 'most stable genius'. Gawd, we could only wish it was fiction!

Jay_Reeves This article sucks & is pretty unfair to those who live in Gulf Shores. Is it their fault tourists flock to the beach in a pandemic? & Fill up hospitals? & Demand to be fed & entertained? Stay home if you’re not comfortable, stay home 4ever. Not mad at peeps living their lives.

I'm sitting in the hospital right now with covid symptoms. The ER is literally filled with the same. This is some scary shit.

Who cares they brought it on themselfs, they were warned, now they pay for not getting vaccinated. MERICA!

Death DeSantis is not going to like closures and cancelations. But it's his fan base dying!

We. Don’t. Care. Personal choice and freedom is all we care about.

If you're still calling it the Redneck Riviera you're old, it's Floribama now.

include a pic of the map :)

Well, color me surprised! Isn't that a shocker?

I recently tested negative for empathy.

All because vaccinated midwesterners are vacationing there.

Another shut down is coming.

It’s going to become a bigger issue in other places if a hurricane hits the gulf this season and those people need to evacuate elsewhere.

And Sturgis was left in the dust by the news media's constant pursuit of Covid hysteria......

Oh well...should of got their shots. Polo...cured it....small pox cured it......Idiots. Covid is the same kind of thing...get your shots!

Would Jay_Reeves' editor permit him to write derogatory articles which referenced Jewish people as 'kikes', black people as 'niggers', Mexican people as 'wetbacks' or Asian people as 'slopes'?

Insulting people and calling them rednecks. Expect more than this racist propaganda from a news outlet.

Spreadneck Riviera

This article is depressing. I don’t get why people can’t understand ‘there are no ICU beds.’ That doesn’t scare anyone?

If vaccinations reduce the chance of hospitalization by 95% then who cares? We can live with a virus that is hardly deadly at all without fear mongering and shut downs

Travel ban between states would be most welcome.

Turns out germs are real.

We had all our travel arrangements made, event & airline tickets purchased, hotel booked and everything for NOLA Jazzfest in October…….we are now undoing all of it. Disappointed, but the correct call was made to cancel.

Tough to have much sympathy for these yokels.

Ooh well.!!!!! These people should gotten vaccinated. Can't help stupid.

thanks

MAN the south just loves F’n round and F’in out. lol
