'Pinocchio' by guillermodeltoro is a gorgeous stop-motion take on this classic story, and the best adaptation of this tale since Disney's 1940s animated version. Our review:

The world doesn’t need any more Pinocchio stories. Sorry everyone, we’re all full up. While Carlo Collodi’s story of the woodcarver Geppetto and his wooden boy come to life have led to some great adaptations , and some wonderful reimaginings , in recent years, we’ve had enough of Pinocchio. We didn’t need Disney’s nightmarish live-action remake of their 1940 film earlier this year, and we certainly haven’t needed two different adaptations starring Roberto Benigni.

RELATED: 'Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio’ Is Tempted by the Evil Count Volpe in New Clip [Exclusive] Another addition, albeit less successful than these other choices, is the decision to place Pinocchio in 1930s Fascist Italy. Like del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth, where we saw how adding fascism into a fairy tale can be an interesting dichotomy for this type of story, but it’s not as well executed here.
