A bipartisan group of U.S. senators including John Cornyn of Texas on Sunday rolled out a deal to strengthen the nation’s gun laws. The deal also includes funding for mental health services and school safety measures.

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, talks with reporters following party policy luncheons on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, June 7, 2022, in Washington, D.C.WASHINGTON — A bipartisan group of U.S. senators, including John Cornyn of Texas, rolled out a deal on Sunday to strengthen the nation’s gun laws by bolstering background checks, requiring greater scrutiny of young buyers and closing the so-called boyfriend loophole after a mass shooting killed 21 at an elementary school in Uvalde last month.

“Families are scared, and it is our duty to come together and get something done that will help restore their sense of safety and security in their communities,” the group wrote in its announcement of the agreement. “Our plan saves lives while also protecting the constitutional rights of law-abiding Americans.

And while it would not establish federal red flag laws to allow law enforcement to confiscate guns from those who may pose a threat to themselves or others, it would offer funding for states to create their own. U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy, a Connecticut Democrat who led negotiations, said Sunday that drafting the bill and passing it “will not be easy,” but “we can get this done.”

New mental health money will likely be diverted (border security anyone?) or current funding will be cut elsewhere. School safety money will just bring more cops and guns into the school but not help prevent more shootings. In schools or anywhere else. This agreement is weak.
