Grocery items getting smaller? It’s not your eyes, it’s ‘shrinkflation’

"Downsizing is the reduction in the size of a product — making the package smaller — instead of simply raising the price directly," said Edgar Dworsky, founder and editor ofin an email to TODAY Food."It is a backdoor price increase." Dworsky said that the downsizing of products comes in waves, usually as a result of inflation.

And while both inflation and shrinkflation are likely now happening in response to the changes in the world as it reopens, Dworsky says it's a trend that has been"going on for decades and is not about to stop." "Shrinkflation involves firms keeping the price per package the same while reducing package size. However, as long as one converts to price per ounce, the inflation is again apparent, and many grocery stores make this calculation for consumers, albeit in small font, on the store shelf."

"Generally, one would expect an increase in raw ingredient prices, or prices of packaging material, wage rates, or costs of transportation lead to an increase in price per ounce," he said.

Orange Juice containers went from 64ozs to 59ozs to 52ozs:Parkay margarine from 48ozs to 45ozs to 41ozs..the consumer retail shelf price is consistently the same-this “downsizing” has been subtly going on for years now..call the producers listed on the back of the pkg..

The 12 or 14 oz 'pint' of ice cream , the shrinking formerly 32 oz of mayo now 26 oz. I could go on but we've all seen it.

I would rather the price raise than end up with fucked up recipes because some corporate bozo needs another $850,000 bonus check.
