Grizzly bear mauls hunter to death in first-of-its-kind attack in largest U.S. national park

The incident happened on Sept. 20 in the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, a 13.2-million-acre area located in southeast Alaska, while the hunter was on a 10-day moose hunt with a friend near the Chisana River drainage at the time of the mauling.The death of the hunter is the first known bear mauling fatality recorded at Wrangell-St.

Designated as a World Heritage Site with Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, the Canadian neighbors Kluane National Park & Reserve and Tatshenshini-Alsek Provincial Park, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve is the largest of all U.S. national parks, the world’s largest international protected wilderness area, and has nine of the 16 highest peaks in the United States.
